  3. Summary:
It’s a story based on five main characters: Sammy, a clerk in a grocery store called A&P. Queenie, a gorgeous girl who leads her two friends through the grocery store wearing only their bathing suits. Lengel, manager of the A&P. Two of Qunnie’s friends, one is a plump, pretty girl in a plaid two-piece bathing suit, the other is observed by Sammy to have the sort of striking features other girls pretend to admire because they know she's no real competition to them, although she is not bad looking actually.
Although they are dressed for the beach, Sammy allows the girls to continue shopping, because he was impressed by Queenie, he keep staring at her till the story end. He imagines details about the girls based on their appearance. However, Lengel, the manager, just feels the girls are not clothed appropriately for a grocery store, and admonishes them, telling them they must have their shoulders covered next time. Sammy believes this action had embarrasses the girls.
In the end, Sammy quit the job, he do this on purpose that he wants the girls regard him as a hero. Sammy then leaves the store, he look forward to some affection or appreciation from the young girls involved, only to find that they've already left, Sammy' was disappoint and feel so dark about his life from now on.

  4. Meaning of the story:
In this story, the store”A&P” is located in Boston, Salem. This place symbolizes the conventional of the Puritan. Sammy is one of the few reactionaries. And his manager, Lengel, represent the whole conservative system. When Sammy resigned his job, Lengel had once said,” Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad.” Sammy really knows the fact, whatever he still in Salem, the place which the manager and customers don’t support his belief, included the three swimming suits-wearing girls. What he would be talked by people, he feels depressed. His imagine about protecting girls has vanished. And what remove and replace is the busy of the reality.
About Sammy, he is a 19-year-old boy, who taunts the upper classes, like the scene he associated the queen’s family and guests wearing ice-cream coat and bow tie. He is also antipathy to the water pipe-fixed freeloader, who is in the lower classes, based on his mocked at him. He even taunted his family because he said that when there are guests came to their house, his parents always take the rough cups to give them lemon water. He seems to look down at all classes included himself. It is not maturity.
There are some excessive ways about the sexism issue; especially “Do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?”, Walking into the A&P with your straps down, I suppose it’s the only kind of face you can have.”, and “there was nothing between the top of the suit and the top of her head except just her”. These three sentences showed that he materializes women.
Sammy casted his eye on Queen symbolizes that he longs for unusual and wants to fight to the authority.
Sammy purposely let the girls heard he said “I quit” is to prove that he protected them and was a hero. However, it didn’t mean anything because the three girls not really know they were being looking at for a long time. Not to mention they know the reason why Sammy quit his job. That’s why “they keep right on going.”.

  7. Answers:
1.Because he wanted to show that he was the hero to protect the three girls.
2.The manager represented the conservative and he didn’t want his supermarket lose it reputation because of the customers who wearing unsuitable to that place.
3.Because Lengel is an old friend of Sammy's parents. He is worry about Sammy's future.
4.He feel his stomach kind of fell and the world to him will be so hard hereafter.
5.Sammy relentlessly ogles and lusts after the beautiful young women who come to A & P in their bikinis, but he is resentful of older women who have lost their beauty. The opposite sex is inscrutable to Sammy, perhaps because he finds them unattainable. Sammy's distant admiration of the women drives all of his actions; he hopes they will be watching when he behaves admirably but he never knows for sure.
